How to free up iPhone storage taken by photos
These steps describe iOS 27. Review your photos before deleting them.
How much iPhone storage do your photos use?
Before you remove pictures, check whether photos are the main use of storage. Open Settings, General, then iPhone Storage. Allow the categories to finish calculating, and look at the space used by Photos. Compare this with other large categories. If another app uses most of the space, deleting a few pictures will not address the main cause.
Device storage and iCloud storage are separate. Buying more iCloud storage does not increase the physical capacity of your iPhone. It can help you keep originals in the cloud while the phone retains smaller copies. Deleting unwanted pictures can reduce the library itself. Choose between those actions according to what you want to keep.
How can you keep photos while using less local space?
Use iCloud Photos with optimized storage if you want to keep your collection. First check the available iCloud space under Settings, your name, then iCloud. Make sure it can hold your library. The Apple storage guide explains device storage and the available options.
- In Settings, open your name, iCloud, then Photos.
- Enable Sync this iPhone.
- Open iPhone Storage on that screen.
- Check that Optimize iPhone Storage is enabled.
With this option, iCloud holds full-resolution originals and the phone can keep smaller copies when needed. Optimization does not promise a fixed amount of free space or an immediate result. Allow time for the library to sync. Consider whether you need originals available without an internet connection before relying on optimized copies.
How do you remove duplicates without reviewing the whole library?
Save a separate copy of important pictures before deleting anything. With iCloud Photos, a deletion syncs to other devices using the same Apple Account. Do not delete a photo expecting its iCloud copy to remain unaffected.
Open Photos, Collections, Utilities, then Duplicates. Review a group, choose Merge and confirm the number of items. Photos combines image quality and relevant data into one retained item. It moves the other copies to Recently Deleted. See Apple’s deletion and duplicate instructions.
Start with groups you understand. An automatic list saves searching, but the decision still affects your library. If Duplicates does not appear, detection may still need time. You can also review pictures manually by event. Keep different views that have a purpose, even when they show the same subject.
Why does Recently Deleted still matter for storage?
Recently Deleted normally keeps removed items recoverable for 30 days. Do not assume that selecting photos for deletion immediately releases every byte they occupied. Recovery is valuable while you check that you kept the right pictures. Open Photos, Collections, Utilities, then Recently Deleted to inspect what remains there.
Permanent deletion cannot be undone through Recently Deleted. If you are certain about the items, authenticate through View Album if requested, select them, open More, choose Delete and confirm the displayed deletion action. Read the Apple instructions before confirming. In a shared library, permissions can also depend on who added an item.
If you are unsure, leave the items recoverable. Space is useful, but a missed expression or an important document can be harder to replace. Recheck iPhone Storage after the changes finish. Compare the result with your starting point rather than an estimated saving alone.
How does Alike help you review repeated shots?
After merging duplicates, look for series that still need a human choice. Several attempts at a selfie, a meal or a landscape can occupy space without being copies you want to merge. Alike groups near-duplicates using Apple Vision on your iPhone. It compares photos close in time and place and suggests a Best Shot using sharpness, exposure, faces and noise.
Review each group, change the suggested keeper when needed, and confirm the removal selection. Alike learns from your choices locally. It has no account, ads or analytics. Its Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets show reclaimable space, which helps you decide when to review the library. Estimated space remains a guide, rather than a guarantee of the final storage reading.
Free use includes 3 scans a month and cleanup one photo at a time. Monthly or yearly Alike Pro subscriptions add unlimited scans and batch cleanup. The yearly plan includes a 7-day trial for eligible new subscribers. The App Store displays the price in your local currency.

How can you make the next cleanup easier?
Review new series after an event, while you still remember which pictures matter. Read how to find and delete similar photos for a review routine. The comparison checklist explains Alike’s choices in more detail.
